I work with so many people who only care about the size of the audience. They want national media exposure: Good Morning America, Today Show, Fox & Friends, CBS This Morning, any of the nightly news shows, CNN, MSNBC, etc because they think size of audience matters. In reality, it’s the quality of the audience that matters. And quality means how it pertains to YOUR audience.
Yes, don’t get me wrong, you will gain tremendous authority by being on any of the above-listed shows or stations, but will you get business? Is your ideal client watching? That’s the key to succeeding in public relations. Where is your ideal client and what are they watching, reading, or listening to?
I’ve always said that you are better off being on a podcast with 1000 of your ideal clients than being on a show with 3 million viewers. You’ll probably get business from the 3 million viewers but you will impact so many more of the 1000 podcast listeners.
Here’s a short 1:32 second video on pitching the podcast to help you with this.
The same is true for trade publications. By niching down to your target audience, you’ll have more success. So you see why I say size really doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, it’s the quality of the audience. Yet another myth we’ve debunked about what PR can do for your business and what you should be looking for out of a PR campaign.

Hi everyone. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. I’m on a roll here with the PR myths so I’m going to keep going week after week until I’ve debunked them all. But now I’m on week 4 and that is size doesn’t matter. But before I get into it, make sure that you subscribe to the YouTube channel and ring the bell so you’re notified of all of these.
Size doesn’t matter in terms of audience. So many of my clients are like, “Oh, I want to be on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, Fox News,” these big, huge national outlets. And if you followed me for any time, you know I’m a huge proponent of the podcast because in a podcast, you can hone in on your ideal target market. Who is your ideal client? And it doesn’t matter if they have 1,000 downloads. If you have 1,000 of your ideal client, that is better than 3 million just random people whom you might get lucky if you have 1,000 of your ideal client. So in terms of publicity, look at things like that. You want to pitch where your ideal clients and customers are. That’s going to give you the best return on investment for your time when you’re doing this.
So look at that. Look at the podcast. Look at the trade publications, if that’s applicable to you. Look at your smaller media outlets and go after those to land in the media. So that is this week’s PR tip. If you’d like to learn more, feel free to set up a call with me at ChatwithChristina.com. And you can always get the Playbook at YourPRPlaybook.com. It’s only $9 and it will really dive in deep and help you land in the media.
