I’m on a mission to debunk PR myths. I’m not sure how many I’ll have but you can see PR Myth #1 here. Hiring a PR firm will not make you famous. YOU can make yourself famous! Watch below.
PR Myth #1
PR Myth #2
Now for PR Myth #2 – you have to send out a press release.to land media attention. The response to that is NO you don’t! Once upon a time, yes, a press release meant something and only solid news stories were sent out. Nowadays, with the internet, anyone can send out a press release. They aren’t used just for news anymore but have become a marketing tool. I’ve interviewed many journalists and they all tell me the same thing… they don’t read press releases. And press releases are expensive. They cost anywhere from $500-$1000 to send out.
SOAPBOX RANT: There are companies that will take your money, send out your press release, see it housed on a backroom server of various ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX stations and tell you you can put AS SEEN ON and those logos on your website. This is WRONG and not authentic. You should only put logos on when you are interviewed or quoted.
Take advantage of the access the internet has given us and build relationships with journalists. Find who is writing about your industry and reach out, show your value, give them information before you start pitching to them. You don’t need to send out an expensive press release to land in the media. You just need to follow the Get PR Famous Formula and be newsworthy, create great hooks, and find the right journalist to pitch.
Next week I’ll be talking about PR Myth #3 which is that PR generates sales. Stay tuned for that.

Hi everyone. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. This week I want to talk about another myth to debunk about publicity. And that is that you have to have a press release in order to land in the media. But before I dive in and tell you why you don’t, make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel and ring the bell so you’re notified of these videos every Friday.
So you do not need to spend $500 on a press release. Once upon a time, it was gold. It was used so rarely. We didn’t have the internet like we do now. Press releases were faxed to newsrooms. Now, a press release is a dime a dozen. There are tens of thousands put out every single day. I’ve interviewed so many journalists. They don’t look at them. They really don’t. They know the format if you want to attach it to your very personalized pitch, you could do that, but what I recommend is that you connect with your journalists, you build your relationships, people who are writing about your industry and you give them specific, good quality, pitches.
Reference something else that they’ve written in the past or shared on television and see how you can provide value to them and pitch that. But by sending a blanket press release, you’re basically telling all those journalists, “I’m sending this out to 100,000 people.” Instead of, “Hey, I want you to have this story and this is why it’s important because I follow you and I understand what you talked about and what you write about.”
So that is this week’s free publicity tip. If you like this, if you’d really like to dive in and uplevel your business using media, using this ability, using messaging and social media, reach out to me. Let’s have a call at ChatwithChristina.com. So It’s www.ChatwithChristina.com and I’ll see you in the media.
