New Perspective on Old Stories
Just because a story has bee covered in the media, doesn’t mean you can’t reuse it. You just need a new perspective on the old story.
Have you ever seen someone quoted in an article or interviewed on television or radio and thought, “That should have beeb me!” Maybe you see your competitor in the media regularly and are frustrated because it should be you. Sometimes coming up with story ideas to pitch the media can be daunting. Instead of re-inventing the wheel on a regular basis, take those stories that should have been you as the expert or the stories your competitor was quoted in, and start a spreadsheet or a file folder and keep track of them. Then, re-pitch the story with a new angle.
Besides breaking news, evergreen-type stories like I wrote about last week (Read HERE), are often repurposed by tweaking something about the story. The media needs to come up with fresh ideas but that’s not to say they won’t take a story they’ve already run and slightly modify the concept and make it new content. I love Southern Living Magazine but if you subscribe for many years, you’ll see they repurpose content after some time.
You can do the same thing. If you see a story that you love, tweak the concept by changing something about the story. You’ll see in the tip below how the Today Show did it based on seasonality. Don’t be afraid to take a story one media outlet did, tweak it and then pitch it to another outlet. If it’s newsworthy on one, it should be newsworthy on another. Journalists are busy and they will often see what other are covering or have covered and create a story and make it their own. You can do the same thing.
Here’s a prior Get Famous Friday PR Tip video I did last year with some additional ideas to do this.

PR TIP – Re-Pitch Stories with a New Angle

Hi everyone. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s, Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. This week I want you to think about what’s a new perspective you can give on an old story. Maybe you saw something on one of the morning shows or the new shows and you thought, “Oh, I could have been the expert for that.” Start a file. Keep those so that, you know, six months from now, 12 months from now, you can go back and re-pitch kind of the same story with a slightly new angle.
My favorite example of that is, it was over the holidays, and I was watching The Today Show, and they had a nutrition expert come on talking about what is the best food court food at the mall – the healthiest to eat – while you’re holiday shopping. I wanted to use that snippet in a presentation so I went to Google it and I found that Meredith Vieira, who was no longer on the Today Show, had done the exact same story. It was a summer segment with a nutritionist about what is the healthiest food court food to eat when you’re at the mall. So take a story and just tweak it. This one was tweaked based on seasonality. They just added the holiday shopping into it.
So, think about what stories that you might have missed on in your industry and then just update them and re-pitch a competing media outlet the same story with your unique twist.
