The easiest way to land media is to use what we call newsjacking. That’s when you take what’s trending in the news right now and you insert yourself as an expert and you pitch the already trending news story. The media is always looking for new angles on a hot story. Here’s a great interview I did with David Meerman Scott, who coined the phrase “newsjacking.” But keep reading because what you want to plan out for the year are your evergreen media pitches. What can you pitch the media when there isn’t something trending? That’s what we call evergreen story ideas. Read below and learn more.
Stack Your Evergreen Pitch Ideas
But in-between newsjacking stories, you need to have what we call evergreen story ideas. These are stories you can plan ahead for because the topic is always relevant. These are things that relate to seasonality or holidays. That will always be happening. Evergreen means they don’t change. For example, an accountant will always be able to pitch around tax season. A doctor will always be able to pitch stories related to winter and cold season. A real estate agent will always have stories around a spring market. These things just don’t change.
It’s important for you to look at a calendar and start identifying what those days/dates are for you and your industry. You should be able to find at least one per month. Also look at the non-traditional calendar. What can you relate to your industry? A real estate agent can pitch a fun story for roof over your head day. Whatever speciality the doctor is, they can find a fun holiday related that. And the accountant can pitch a story related to college graduation in June giving new graduates tax tips. Build this out for an an entire year. This way you are pitching the media at least once per month and then you can sprinkle in the newsjacking stories when they are relevant.

Evergreen Pitch Ideas PR Tip
Hi everyone. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. This week I want to talk about stacking your media arsenal with evergreen pitch ideas. Evergreen pitches are those that are not breaking news or timely news or things that happen every year all the time, things like holidays, things like seasonality, anything at all, that is always happening in the calendar is what we call evergreen. You know, sleep disorder in December, graduations, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, all of our major holidays. Those are evergreen story ideas.
So think about in your industry, what relates to you all the time and make a list so that when you’re not pitching breaking news stories, you have these evergreen stories to fall back on.
