It’s so hard to think about pitching the media now for stories that will be relevant in June, July and August but that’s what national publications are looking for. It’s time to pitch your summer stories now. You have to think ahead. I learned this the hard way when I tried to pitch my product in November for the holiday gift guides. Little did I know then that holiday gift guides are closed six months in advance. So in June you have to be thinking about what gifts people will want for the holidays.
What I didn’t know, but learned quickly, is that the media works on a calendar. You pitch national publications four months in advance, regional publications two months in advance and television at least 2 weeks – of course if anything is “breaking news” you want to pitch that ASAP. Even the national publications have .coms that they are looking for relevant content for.
Here’s a video I did about what to pitch when:
What to Pitch the Media When
Now is the time to think about what to pitch in the summer. Tie your business to holidays or events related to summer. Covid is still a hot topic (unfortunately), vaccines, travel, summer vacation travel is supposed to boom this year, Father’s Day, graduation, 4th of July. The list is endless. What industry are you in and what can you tie into with summer? Position yourself as the industry expert and tie it into summer.
That being said, you have to do that now. You have to think ahead and be the expert that you are and predict what is going to happen this summer in your industry. You can find lots of videos on our YouTube Channel that will help you with this. Check out videos on Editorial Calendars to help you see what magazines are going to be covering. Make it easy for them to say yes by pitching a theme they are already going to be covering.
