Don’t reinvent the wheel every time you want to pitch the media. Pitch your story around trends! What is going in the world right now? The media needs to cover what people are talking about… that’s how they get people to watch/read/listen. By “newsjacking” a story that is hot right now, you are more likely to be able to get a “yes.” A former news anchor friend told me that the mantra in the newsroom used to be, “If it bleeds, it leads.” Now it’s “If it’s shareable, it’s airable.” They need eyeballs on their stories so make it easy for them. What are people talking about on Google? on Twitter? How can you insert your expertise into the conversation? Check out and look at Twitter, what is the buzz about today?

See what people are talking about and when you have that “ah ha” moment of what you can talk about related to that topic, create a media pitch around that. Being newsworthy is the #1 step in my 3-step Get PR Famous system. Instead of wracking your brain on what to pitch, see what people are already talking about and use that to create your newsworthy story idea. You’ll need the other two steps for your best chance of success and that is #2 – Create a great hook. That’s your subject line, Make the journalist think, “WHAT? I need to read more!” And then make sure you are sending it to the right journalist. Who is writing about your topic? Send your story idea to them. They already cover it, why go with an unknown?
