From Virginia Tech to New York City
MB Roberts, known affectionately as MB, knew from her college days that she wanted to pursue a career in journalism and communications. Graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in communications and journalism and an art minor, MB found herself navigating a field that was not straightforward. “It didn’t seem super practical,” she reminisced, explaining that she didn’t have a clear path laid out for her post-graduation.
After a brief stint as a researcher for a lobbying firm in DC, MB yearned for a more creative environment, leading her to New York City with just $300 and a dream. The lack of connections and clear direction didn’t deter her. She pitched stories to various publications, learning through trial and error. A breakthrough came when her then-boyfriend, now husband, a successful Sports Illustrated photographer, asked her to write an article for him. This led to her first paid piece in Photographic Magazine, marking the beginning of her freelance writing career.
Breaking into the Magazine Industry
MB’s journey was far from linear. She faced numerous rejections but persisted with her pitches. One notable story was when she pitched an article to Brides Magazine about whether to change one’s name after marriage. Initially rejected, MB sent it again and caught the attention of a new editor who loved the piece. Perseverance is so important, especially when you’re first starting out.
Working in different capacities, from freelancing to staff writing, MB’s big break came when she joined Country Weekly Magazine in Nashville. Although she was older than most entry-level reporters, her previous experience with books and freelance writing gave her a unique edge. Her time at Country Weekly allowed her to interview many celebrities, including her favorite, Keith Urban, whom she described as down-to-earth and engaging.
Lessons from Early Career Struggles
MB’s early career was characterized by a relentless pursuit of opportunities, often facing more failures than successes. She highlighted the importance of resilience in a highly competitive industry. MB shared a story about how she would send the same pitch multiple times, slightly tweaking it each time until it resonated with the right person. This strategy paid off when her piece for Brides Magazine was eventually accepted after multiple rejections.
This period also taught her the importance of networking and making connections. Despite not having initial connections in the industry, MB leveraged every opportunity to meet people and make an impression. Whether it was through friends, acquaintances, or sheer persistence, she built a network that, coupled with her talent, eventually opened doors for her.
The Art of Interviewing
Throughout her career, MB has interviewed numerous celebrities, but some experiences stand out more than others. In addition to the interview with Keith Urban, who impressed her with his friendly demeanor, MB recalls the memorable moment of interviewing S.E. Hinton, author of “The Outsiders,” a book that had a significant impact on MB during her youth.
Additionally, MB recounted her interviews with icons from “West Side Story,” Rita Moreno and George Chakiris. Their energy and stories left a lasting impression on her. These interviews not only highlighted her journalistic skills but also her ability to connect deeply with her subjects.
Interviewing celebrities is an art form that MB has mastered over the years. She shared tips on how to get the most out of an interview, such as doing thorough research beforehand and creating a comfortable atmosphere for the interviewee. MB emphasized the importance of listening actively and steering the conversation naturally.
Transitioning into the Tech Industry
Four years ago, MB made a significant career shift from journalism to becoming a content marketing writer for a tech company in Nashville. This transition was challenging, as she had to adapt to new technologies and methodologies. Despite the difficulties, MB views this experience as incredibly rewarding.
The shift from print to digital also influenced her podcasting journey. Her new podcast, “Let’s Talk Ladies: Conversations Across Generations,” combines her love for interviewing with her passion for sharing stories across generations. The podcast addresses various topics, from beauty and health to career advice and personal anecdotes, providing a platform for women to share their experiences and insights.
Adapting to a New Environment
Transitioning to a tech company required MB to learn new skills and adapt to a different work culture. She described her initial struggles with the fast-paced environment and the steep learning curve. However, MB’s determination and willingness to learn helped her overcome these challenges. She now enjoys writing marketing materials about cutting-edge technology, from smart home devices to the latest in mobile tech.
MB also highlighted the importance of staying relevant in an ever-changing industry. Her ability to pivot from traditional journalism to content marketing in the tech industry is a testament to her adaptability and continuous desire to learn and grow. This transition has not only broadened her skill set but also opened new opportunities for creative expression.
Embracing AI in Writing
The rise of AI in writing is a topic of interest and concern for many writers, including MB. While she acknowledges its utility in certain tasks, she firmly believes that AI cannot replace the human touch in writing. “It’s a tool, not a replacement,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of human creativity and authenticity in storytelling.
MB uses AI for specific functions like social media summaries but remains cautious about its limitations and potential errors. She stresses the need for thorough review and the ethical considerations regarding plagiarism and source accuracy.
The Human Element in Writing
MB elaborated on the irreplaceable human element in writing. She believes that the emotional depth, nuanced understanding, and creative flair that human writers bring to the table are aspects that AI cannot replicate. While AI can assist with generating ideas or organizing content, the soul of a piece of writing comes from the writer’s personal experiences, insights, and emotional connections.
In her current role, MB occasionally uses AI to streamline certain tasks but always ensures that her personal touch remains evident in the final product. She views AI as a complementary tool rather than a threat, enhancing her productivity without compromising the quality of her work.
