I recently appeared on *Good Day DC* as a lifestyle contributor, which is always an exciting experience. As a regular guest on the show, I get to share tips and tricks that make everyday life just a little bit easier, and this time was no exception. Whether you’re clasping jewelry, wrapping gifts, or struggling to open stubborn jars, I’ve got some fun and practical life hacks that can save you time and energy. I was thrilled to share these simple yet genius ideas, and I’m excited to walk you through each one in this blog post.
Celebrating Milestones: My 75th Podcast Episode
Before diving into life hacks, I want to share a personal milestone. On *Good Day DC*, I celebrated the release of the 75th episode of my podcast, *Living Ageless and Bold*. It’s hard to believe we’ve come this far, and I couldn’t be more proud of the incredible women over 50 that I’ve had the privilege of interviewing. From reinvention stories to inspiring achievements, each guest brings a unique perspective on life after 50. One of my favorite recent interviews was with the co-founder of Kate Spade, where we discussed how they launched their first purse using a burlap potato sack because they couldn’t afford fabric. Talk about innovation! If you’re interested in hearing more amazing stories like this, you can find *Living Ageless and Bold* wherever you get your podcasts or on YouTube.
Clasping a Bracelet with Ease
Let’s start with a hack that anyone who has ever struggled with a bracelet clasp can appreciate. If you’ve ever tried to put on a bracelet by yourself, you know how frustrating it can be. But don’t worry, there’s a simple solution that involves just a bobby pin.
Here’s what you do: Take the bobby pin and hold it at the end of your bracelet. With the bobby pin stabilizing one side, you can easily loop the clasp into place without having to fumble around. You can also do this with a paperclip, but the bobby pin works like a charm! This hack is a lifesaver, especially when you’re traveling or on the go.
Fastening a Necklace Without the Struggle
Next up is a hack for necklaces, which can be equally as tricky to clasp. This one’s so easy, and it involves something you probably already have in your home: tape!
To get your necklace clasped easily, just tape one end of the necklace to the back of your neck. With the other end stabilized by the tape, you can easily fasten the clasp without it slipping out of your hands. Once you’re done, just peel the tape off. Voila! No more wrestling with that delicate necklace.
Zipping Up a Dress without Anyone to Help
Now, this hack is for anyone who’s ever struggled with zipping up the back of a dress when there’s no one around to help. All you need is an alligator clip and some string or twine.
Before putting the dress on, attach the alligator clip to the zipper pull. Then, once you’ve got the dress on, use the string to pull the zipper up. This hack is especially handy when you’re traveling solo or getting ready for an event. And as I mentioned on the show, this is also perfect for news anchors and reporters who often wear mics and earpieces that make zipping up even more complicated!
Applying Lotion to Hard-to-Reach Places
If you’ve ever tried to apply lotion to your back and failed miserably, this next hack is for you. It’s so simple, yet so effective.
All you need is a wooden spoon and a sock. Yes, a sock! Wrap the sock around the spoon, squirt some lotion onto the sock, and then use the spoon to reach all those tricky areas on your back. You’ll get full coverage without any awkward stretching or twisting. This hack is perfect for those days when you need a little extra hydration but don’t have anyone around to help.
Removing a Key from a Key Ring Without Breaking a Nail
If you’re like me and love getting your nails done, the last thing you want to do is ruin them while trying to remove a key from a stubborn key ring. But I’ve got a hack that will protect your manicure.
Use a staple remover to gently pry open the key ring. This creates just enough space for you to slide the key off without bending or breaking your nails. I’m telling you, this hack is a game changer. You’ll never struggle with key rings again!
Using Clothespins for Gift Wrapping
With the holiday season around the corner, this hack is sure to come in handy. Clothespins aren’t just for laundry—they can be a second pair of hands when you’re wrapping gifts!
When you’re trying to tie a ribbon around a gift, use a clothespin to hold the ribbon in place while you tie the knot. It’s like having an extra set of hands to help you make those packages look perfect. This hack is a must-try for anyone who wants their gifts to look professionally wrapped with minimal effort.
Hammering Nails Without Hurting Your Fingers
If you’ve ever hammered a nail and accidentally hit your finger, you’re not alone. But this hack will help you avoid that painful mishap.
Simply use a clothespin to hold the nail in place while you hammer it into the wall. The clothespin will keep your fingers out of harm’s way, and you’ll still get the nail in securely. This hack is perfect for DIY projects around the house.
Opening Jars with Ease
We’ve all been there—struggling to open a tightly sealed jar. Luckily, there are a couple of simple hacks to make jar opening a breeze.
First, try placing a rubber band around the lid of the jar. The rubber band gives you extra grip, making it easier to twist the lid off. If that doesn’t work, you can use a jar opener to release the vacuum seal. Either way, you’ll be able to pop that jar open without any frustration.
Fastening a Button with Tweezers
Last but not least, here’s a hack for when you’re trying to button up a shirt, but the button just won’t cooperate. This is where tweezers come in handy.
Use the tweezers to pull the button through the hole. The added precision of the tweezers makes it much easier to get the button into place, especially when dealing with small or tight buttonholes.
