December and January are the most difficult times of the year to land in the media. Seasoned media experts often get to come back for end-of-year wrap-ups. It’s very hard to break into media now. That being said, I have a great hack for anyone to land in the media today! Don’t pitch what everyone else is going to which is end-of-year wrap-ups, 2023 predictions, resolutions, weight loss, and organization… you’ll never cut through the noise But if you pitch something they aren’t expecting… you give the media a “WOW! I didn’t think of that!” You are more likely to get the yes.
The key to landing media is providing value to the journalist’s audience. We all think we want me to benefit us but that will happen eventually. You’ll reap the benefits of landing in the media so make sure you give them something that will be easy to get the yes.
Are you wondering how to do this? Watch the short 1:30 video below where I tell you how to use new laws in your city or state to pitch the media and land a segment positioning you as the expert in your industry!
You can do this twice a year in January and July. That’s when the laws change. A quick google search of “new laws in [your state] January 2023” will tell you what’s coming. I just did it for Virginia where I live and interestingly, there are new laws going into place with regards to privacy:
- The right to opt out of the processing of personal data for targeted advertising purposes;
- The right to opt out of the sale of personal data; and.
- The right to opt out of profiling based upon personal data.
Attorneys could speak to the legalities if companies don’t do it. IT people could discuss what needs to be done to offer the opt out. Digital marketers could talk about how this could impact a business’ lead generation, and brick-and-mortar stores could talk about how they might lose customers as people opt out and forget about their store. Do you see all the various angles you could do to pitch
Look at the laws in your state and see what’s happening and what you can pitch about!

Hi! It’s Christina with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip.
As we are approaching the end of the year,
it’s very difficult to break into landing in the media.
This is a time when seasoned experts get to come back and talk about
their end-of-year wrap-ups and things like that.
And I’m very transparent about that. If this is your first time pitching,
this is a difficult time to pitch. That being said,
I do have a little trick for you to possibly land in the media.
And I talk about this in July, and I’m going to talk about it again for January 1st.
Laws change July 1st and January 1st.
Could be your state laws, could be your county laws,
look into any new laws that are going into effect.
So you could pitch the last week of December or you could pitch right after the new year.
But see if there’s something related to your industry that positions you as an expert.
It is not something that lots of people are going to pitch.
So they’re going to see all of the end of year roundups.
January, they’re going to see weight loss, organization, New Year’s resolutions,
failing at your resolutions, blah blah blah.
Everybody’s going do that.
But the new laws is just a nice way to sneak in if you haven’t
yet had media and you’re ready to go from established to known by being in the media.
So check it out, see what you can do.
See if you can pitch a story. And I can’t wait to see you in the media.
