TikTok Trends – Let TikTok Be Your Publicist

Like it or not, TikTok is here to stay. They have over 1 billion users and most are between the ages of 13 and 60. It’s a huge demographic so it’s important to pay attention to what is trending on TikTok. Whether you are on it or not, it’s a great place to see what people are talking about. If it’s trending on TikTok, it’s probably trending everywhere else – or it will be soon. Remember, that’s what the media loves to cover. They want to discuss what people are already talking about online. That gives them an instant audience.

I’ve shared posts about newsjacking before where you take what’s trending online and pitch around that. We used to suggest just looking at Google and Twitter but now I’m throwing TikTok into that mix. Watch this great interview I did with David Meerman Scott who coined the phrase “neswjacking.”

I want you to look at TikTok because that is one of the fastest growing social media platforms. It grew 800% from January 2018 to January 2020. You might think it’s out of your demographic but 13-60 is a pretty wide one and the media is paying attention to what’s going on there. See what’s trending and pitch your expertise around that. Even if you aren’t active on TikTok, you can still pay attention to what’s going on there and what’s trending.

I’ve seen multiple stories on television with experts talking about what TikTok is talking about. I think we’ve all heard about the Feta Pasta recipe that went viral – millions and millions of views. I’ve seen “sure cures” for this or that, new exercise programs, teeth whitening concoctions, fashion trends, and so much more. It’s so easy to insert yourself into that conversation. And make sure when you pitch the story you mention that this topic has hundreds of thousands or millions of views on TikTok.

Let TikTok be your publicist. I’m all about the ease of PR. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Give the media what everyone already wants. If millions are paying attention to this topic on TikTok then a television station’s viewers are likely to be interested in that topic as well.

Hi everybody. It’s Christina with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. This week I want to give you a great way to find story ideas. See what’s trending on TikTok. It’s amazing. Everyone’s coming up with these ideas, these cures, these systems, these workouts, all kinds of things.

See what’s trending on TikTok and talk about it. Use your expertise. Will this work? Will it not work? If you’re a doctor and somebody’s giving the magic, you know, weight loss cure to drink this potion, you can talk about that. Maybe you own a gym. You own a yoga studio. You’re a healthcare or health and wellness professional and they’re talking about a new exercise plan or a new eating regimen. See what they’re talking about. Maybe it’s a line of clothing. Who knows.

I want you to go onto TikTok and I want you to see what’s trending and I want you to see how you can apply your expertise to it. And then when you pitch the media, I want you to talk about, “Hey, I’m talking about what’s happening on TikTok and has over a million views.” Because that helps you build influence using somebody else’s influence and the media knows this. They know that if you’re talking about a story that’s got millions and millions of views on TikTok, it’s going to help the station get more views. So that is this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR tip.
