Public Relations 101

Building relationships with the media is the basics of PR… let’s call it Public Relations 101. You pitch, consistently, and you land media. You provide value to journalists and this starts to build that relationship. Just like you would ask a friend “how are you doing?” “what are you working on?” You can do the same thing with your journalist “friends.”

It’s fine to ask them what they’re working on… how you can you help them. This may or may not be you providing your own expertise, it could be offering someone else for them to use. I landed on the Dr. Oz show because I built a relationships with a journalist that started with Help a Reporter Out. I responded to a pitch. Then I connected with her on Linkedin. I continued to pitch and also follow her on social media and comment and share her posts. She must have looked at my profile because she reached out about the fact how connected I am in the entrepreneurial world and she started asking if I knew people with specific expertise for various segments. I helped with those and stayed in touch asking, “What are you working on? Anything I can help you with on any future stories?”

I was able to refer several people to the show. Then, when an opportunity came up for me, she asked me to come to New York and be on the show. The world is very noisy, especially post-Covid so building relationships and having rapport with journalist is crucial to your PR success.

Hi everybody. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. This week, I want to encourage you to reach out to those journalists that you have built a relationship with, and a connection with, and just ask them what they’re working on and if there’s anything you can help them with. So instead of pitch, pitch, pitch, build a connection, have a conversation, see where you might be able to help them.

I know that when I do that, they are really, really appreciative of that. So even if you know, if there’s something going on, “Hey, October is National Women’s Small Business Month, I was just checking to see if you were running any stories on that and if there’s anything I can do to help you.” Just like that.
