When the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, there’s nothing I love more than making my home feel warm, inviting, and incredibly cozy. And if you know me, you know I’m not a big fan of winter!
But I’ve discovered that surrounding myself with things I genuinely love makes those colder months so much more enjoyable.
I recently joined Marissa Mitchell on FOX 5 DC’s The Marissa Mitchell Show to share some of my favorite winter home essentials. From the softest blankets I’ve ever felt to luxurious loungewear, heated coffee mugs, and beautiful home fragrances, these are the little things that make a big difference.
Here’s what I love most. You don’t have to redecorate your entire home or spend a fortune to make it feel completely different. Sometimes all it takes is changing a few pillows, adding a gorgeous throw, or finding that one incredibly comfortable piece of clothing you’ll want to live in all winter.
I’m a big believer that comfort and luxury can go hand in hand. Your home should be a place where you can relax, recharge, and feel good, especially when it’s freezing outside.
Here are my favorite ways to make every room in your home a little cozier this winter.
1. Nordic Beach Wraps: The Coziest Thing You’ll Wear All Winter
SHOP: Nordic Beach Wraps
I’m starting with one of my absolute favorite products, and something I’ve been wearing for five years: Nordic Beach wraps.
If you’ve never experienced one of these, you’re missing out. The fabric is unbelievably soft. When Marissa felt it on the show, she couldn’t believe how luxurious it was.
What makes Nordic Beach so special is its versatility. These aren’t your typical sweaters or jackets. They’re oversized, plush wraps that feel like you’re wearing your favorite blanket, but they’re stylish enough to wear almost anywhere.
I recently wore mine on a trip to New England, and people actually stopped me to ask what I was wearing!
I’ve worn mine to football games, tailgates, while traveling, and even dressed up for an evening out. They’re perfect for those situations when you want to look put together but don’t want to sacrifice comfort.
The original wraps come in beautiful colors, including cream and sage green. I also recently added one of the longer styles to my collection, complete with a hood. It’s like wrapping yourself in a warm hug.
These have become one of my go-to gifts because they’re something people can enjoy for years. Whether you’re shopping for your mom, sister, daughter, or best friend, a Nordic Beach wrap is a wonderful way to give someone a little everyday luxury.
2. Lola Blankets: The Blanket That Made Me Never Want to Leave the Couch
SHOP: Lola Blankets
I discovered Lola Blankets while visiting my daughter in Chicago, and I’m not exaggerating when I say I didn’t want to get off her couch.
You know those blankets that feel so good you immediately start wondering where you can buy one? This is that blanket.
Lola Blankets are made with an incredibly soft faux-fur fabric that feels luxurious against your skin. They’re plush, beautiful, and exactly what you want when you’re settling in for a movie or curling up with a book.
The brand has accumulated tens of thousands of five-star reviews, and after experiencing one myself, I understand why.
Lola Blankets
But here’s another reason I love them. A beautiful blanket can completely change the look of a room.
During the summer, I love lighter-weight Turkish blankets and airy fabrics. Once winter arrives, I swap those out for heavier, plush throws that instantly make my living room feel warmer.
Drape a Lola Blanket over the back of your sofa, fold one at the foot of your bed, or keep one in your favorite reading chair.
It’s functional, it’s beautiful, and it’s one of those purchases you’ll appreciate every single day.
And yes, it makes an incredible holiday gift!
3. Faux-Fur Pillows: The Easiest Way to Give Your Living Room a Winter Makeover
SHOP: Lola Blankets
One of my favorite decorating tricks is switching out my throw pillows with the seasons.
It’s such a simple change, but it can make your living room look completely different.
In spring and summer, I gravitate toward lighter colors and fabrics. But when winter arrives, I bring out the faux fur, velvet, chunky textures, and richer tones.
Think creamy whites, warm taupes, deep burgundy, forest green, or soft gray. These colors add warmth without making a room feel heavy.
I especially love pairing faux-fur pillows with a plush Lola Blanket. The combination creates that layered, inviting look you see in beautiful hotels and professionally designed living rooms.
And you don’t have to replace every pillow. Sometimes swapping just two or three is enough.
If you’re trying to make your home feel cozier without committing to a major decorating project, start here.
My advice is to mix textures rather than matching everything perfectly. A velvet pillow next to faux fur, or a chunky knit alongside a smooth fabric, creates visual interest.
It’s an easy way to make your home look more thoughtfully styled while also making it more comfortable.
For plush coordinating options, explore the Lola Blankets pillow collection.
4. Barefoot Dreams Robes: Bring a Little Spa Luxury Into Your Everyday Routine
SHOP: Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Robe
There are bathrobes, and then there are Barefoot Dreams bathrobes.
If you’ve ever stayed at a beautiful luxury hotel and wished you could bring that spa-like feeling home, this is one way to do it.
I’ve loved Barefoot Dreams for years. In fact, I carried the brand in my store back in the early 2000s! It’s been around for more than 30 years, and its signature softness is still just as appealing today.
The CozyChic robe is one of those pieces you put on and immediately feel relaxed. It’s incredibly plush, soft against your skin, and perfect for chilly mornings or winding down at night.
What I appreciate about Barefoot Dreams is the quality. In a world where we’re constantly surrounded by fast fashion and disposable products, I love finding pieces designed for repeated wear.
The classic CozyChic robe is made from a soft, machine-washable microfiber knit, making it practical as well as luxurious.
Barefoot Dreams®
Whether you’re enjoying your morning coffee, reading before bed, or spending a lazy Sunday at home, this is the kind of comfort you’ll look forward to.
And if you’re searching for a holiday gift for someone who seems to have everything, a beautiful robe is always a thoughtful choice.
5. Barefoot Dreams Loungewear and Socks: Comfort You Can Wear Beyond the Couch
SHOP: Barefoot Dreams Loungewear and Socks
While we’re talking about Barefoot Dreams, I have to share another reason I love this brand: the loungewear.
During my FOX 5 segment, I showed Marissa some of my newest pieces, including a wide-leg lounge outfit that combines comfort with a really flattering silhouette.
Wide-leg pants are everywhere right now, and I love that you can incorporate this trend into your everyday wardrobe without giving up comfort.
The beautiful thing about elevated loungewear is that you don’t necessarily have to change clothes when you leave the house.
Pair a soft sweater with jeans, add a collared shirt underneath for a more polished look, or wear a coordinated lounge set when you’re traveling or running errands.
It’s the perfect balance of looking good and feeling good.
And we can’t forget the socks!
Barefoot Dreams makes wonderfully soft socks that are perfect for cold floors and chilly evenings. I love having a pair ready to put on when I get home.
I think sometimes we save our nicest things for special occasions. But why shouldn’t everyday life feel special, too?
Beautiful, comfortable clothing is one of those small luxuries that can make even an ordinary winter day feel a little better.
6. Cozy Shearling Slippers: Keep Your Feet Warm All Winter
SHOP: Shop Bombas Slippers
One of the first things I do when the weather turns cold is bring out my winter slippers.
I practically live in them!
The slippers I shared on FOX 5 feature a suede exterior, soft shearling lining, and memory foam cushioning. It’s a wonderful combination because you get warmth, softness, and support.
I love slippers that feel comfortable enough to wear around the house all day but also look nice enough for a quick errand.
And believe me, I’ve been known to wear mine to the grocery store!
When you’re shopping for winter slippers, pay attention to what’s inside. A soft lining makes them inviting, but cushioning and a supportive sole can make a big difference when you’re wearing them for extended periods.
I also like a pair with a sturdy outsole rather than the thin, flimsy bottoms you sometimes find on inexpensive slippers.
Winter comfort really does start from the ground up.
A great pair of slippers also makes a practical holiday gift. It’s something people will actually use instead of putting away in a closet.
Shopping note: The exact slipper brand wasn’t identified in the segment transcript, so I’ve left this without a product link rather than sending readers to the wrong item.
7. Ember Temperature-Controlled Mugs: Never Drink Cold Coffee Again
SHOP: Ember Tumbler 2 | Ember Temperature-Controlled Mugs
Coffee lovers, this one is for you!
How many times have you made a delicious cup of coffee, gotten distracted, and returned to find it completely cold?
Or maybe you’ve reheated the same cup three times before finally giving up.
That’s why I love Ember.
Unlike an ordinary insulated mug that simply slows down cooling, Ember uses temperature-control technology to keep your beverage at your preferred drinking temperature.
The Ember Tumbler 2 lets you choose from five settings between 125°F and 145°F using a button on the bottom. It can maintain your selected temperature for more than three hours with the lid on, depending on conditions.
I love the convenience of being able to sit down with my coffee, get caught up in something, and come back to a drink that’s still hot.
And for anyone who enjoys a leisurely morning, this is a game changer.
The Tumbler 2 is especially practical because it’s designed for use on the go. It fits in car cupholders, includes two interchangeable lids, and is top-rack dishwasher safe.
That last feature is a big selling point for me. I love products that make life easier, but I don’t want complicated cleanup.
Ember also offers traditional coffee mugs that are perfect for your desk, kitchen counter, or favorite reading spot.
It’s a wonderful gift for coffee and tea lovers, especially those people who already seem to own every kitchen gadget imaginable.
And as I joked with Marissa, you won’t have to keep getting off the couch to reheat your coffee!
8. Flannel Sheets: Turn Your Bedroom Into a Cozy Winter Retreat
There’s nothing quite like climbing into a warm, comfortable bed on a cold winter night.
One of my favorite seasonal changes is switching out my bedding.
Just as I replace lightweight throws in the living room, I love bringing warmer fabrics into the bedroom when temperatures drop.
Flannel sheets are one of the easiest ways to make your bed feel more inviting.
Their soft, brushed texture creates a cozy feeling that’s perfect for chilly nights. And unlike a complete bedroom makeover, changing your sheets takes just a few minutes.
I also love using the change of seasons as an opportunity to update the colors in my bedroom.
In the warmer months, I tend to prefer lighter bedding. During winter, I gravitate toward warmer neutrals, deeper colors, and additional layers.
You can coordinate your sheets with a new comforter, add a textured blanket at the foot of the bed, or bring in a few decorative pillows.
The goal is to create a bedroom that feels like a retreat.
I always joke that when I’m tucked into my winter bedding, I feel like I’m wrapped up in a burrito. And that’s exactly how I want to feel when it’s freezing outside!
When choosing flannel sheets, look for softness, breathability, and easy-care instructions. Cotton flannel is a popular option because it offers warmth while still allowing some airflow.
It’s one of those simple seasonal upgrades that makes going to bed something to look forward to.
Shopping note: The specific flannel sheet brand needs confirmation before adding a direct product link.
9. Hotel Collection Scent Diffusers: Make Your Home Smell Like a Luxury Hotel
SHOP: Hotel Collection Scent Diffusers and Fragrances
Have you ever walked into a beautiful hotel and immediately noticed how incredible it smelled?
There’s something about a signature fragrance that makes a space feel sophisticated and welcoming.
That’s what I love about Hotel Collection.
My husband gave me a Hotel Collection scent diffuser for Christmas last year, and I’ve really enjoyed using it in our home.
During my FOX 5 segment, I shared one of the fragrances with Marissa, and her reaction was immediate. It smelled like the holidays!
Hotel Collection offers home fragrances inspired by the scent experiences associated with luxury hotels.
The brand’s diffusers use waterless cold-air diffusion technology to disperse fragrance into a room.
Hotel Collection
What I love is that scent adds another dimension to decorating.
We spend so much time thinking about how our homes look, but how they smell can be just as important to the overall experience.
In the winter, I especially enjoy fragrances that create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Think seasonal notes, cozy woods, subtle spices, and comforting scents that make guests feel at home.
You can also change fragrances throughout the year, just as you change your pillows, blankets, and other accessories.
It’s an easy way to make your home feel fresh without moving a single piece of furniture.
And if you’re hosting friends or family for the holidays, a beautiful fragrance can make the entire gathering feel more special.
10. Warm Lighting and Seasonal Touches: The Finishing Details That Make a Home Feel Cozy
You can have the softest blankets, the most beautiful pillows, and the most luxurious robe, but there’s one more element that makes a big difference: lighting.
During my conversation with Marissa, we talked about how important it is to appeal to all the senses when creating a comfortable home.
And lighting is a big part of that.
Bright overhead lighting might be perfect when you’re cooking or cleaning, but when it’s time to relax, I love softer, warmer light.
Try turning off the overhead fixtures and using table lamps instead.
If your lights have dimmers, lower them in the evening. You might be surprised at how quickly the mood of a room changes.
I also like incorporating little seasonal touches, whether that’s a beautiful bowl of potpourri, a few candles, or a simple arrangement on a coffee table.
None of these changes has to be expensive or complicated.
In fact, I think the most beautiful homes are often the ones that feel personal rather than perfectly decorated.
Your home should reflect the way you actually live.
If you love curling up on the couch to watch a movie, make that space extra comfortable.
If your favorite part of the day is enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, create a little corner where you can relax.
And if you love entertaining, think about how to make guests feel welcome the moment they walk through the door.
It’s those thoughtful details that turn a house into a home.
How to Make Your Home Feel Cozy Without Redecorating Everything
Here’s the biggest takeaway from my FOX 5 segment: you don’t need to start from scratch to create a cozy winter home.
I think we sometimes make decorating more complicated than it needs to be.
You don’t have to repaint your walls, replace your furniture, or take on a big DIY project every time the seasons change.
Start with what you already have.
A sofa you love can feel completely different with a new throw and a few textured pillows. Your bedroom can become a winter retreat with flannel sheets and a warmer comforter.
Even your morning routine can feel more luxurious with a great robe, comfortable slippers, and a coffee mug that keeps your drink at exactly the right temperature.
And don’t forget the little details that make you happy.
Maybe it’s the scent of your favorite candle, the feeling of a plush blanket, or simply having a cozy place to sit and read.
Those everyday comforts matter.
I may never become someone who loves cold weather, but I can certainly make the winter months more enjoyable by creating a home I love spending time in.
And that’s really what cozy living is all about.
My Favorite Winter Home Essentials Make Great Holiday Gifts, Too
Another thing I love about these products is that so many of them make wonderful gifts.
I tend to gravitate toward presents that people will actually use and enjoy, rather than things that will sit on a shelf.
A Nordic Beach wrap for someone who’s always cold. A Lola Blanket for the person who loves movie nights. A Barefoot Dreams robe for someone who deserves a little pampering.
An Ember mug for the coffee lover who can never finish a cup while it’s still hot.
Or a Hotel Collection diffuser for someone who loves making their home feel beautiful.
These are gifts that bring comfort into everyday life, and I think that’s especially meaningful during the holiday season.
Whether you’re shopping for someone else or treating yourself, I hope these ideas inspire you to bring a little more warmth and luxury into your home this winter.
Because even if we can’t control the weather outside, we can certainly make the inside feel wonderful.
Here’s to staying warm, feeling cozy, and enjoying the little luxuries that make everyday life better!
