One of the top tips for a media interview I can give you is to be real and authentic. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Don’t be flashy or salesy. And most importantly, don’t make up an answer. If you are asked a question by a journalist and you don’t know the answer, tell them that. When you try to answer something you don’t know, it could backfire on you – especially on a recorded interview like television, radio, or podcast. You can also guide the conversation back to what you can answer. “I’m not actually sure about that [name] but, if you look at…” is a great way to get it back on track.

Years ago I interviewed a former producer of the Oprah Winfrey show and I asked her about how people like Dr. Phil and Suze Orman were so popular on the show and always invited back and she said it was their authenticity and how they connected with the audience. By being yourself you are more likely to have an amazing interview and more likely to be invited back…. even if you don’t know the answer to a question or two that you are asked. People want to connect with people they see on TV or hear on the radio or a podcast. It’s a phrase I use with my kids a lot but it works here too – “Just do you!”

Hi everybody. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s Free Publicity Friday PR Tip. This week, I want to talk about, what if you’re in an interview, especially on television, and you don’t know the answer to the question. But, before I tell you what to do, make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel and ring the bell so you’re notified of all these amazing videos that we put out.

So what do you do? You’re in a television studio, you don’t know the answer, and you have that instant panic. I don’t want you to fumble with an answer. It is okay to say you don’t know, especially if you don’t know. It will be much worse if you say something that’s not accurate and then that’s out on television for the world to see. So I want you to get comfortable with the fact that you can say, “I don’t know the answer to this.” And maybe you can sway the conversation a little bit more to something relevant that you do have the facts about. So make sure that you’re comfortable enough to say you don’t know. And then have it ready have a topic ready that you could say, “but, or however, in this instance, X Y and Z,”

So that is this week’s PR tip. I hope you enjoy these tips every week. There’s a library full to help you land in the media And if you’re really ready to uplevel your game and really get your message out there and get your voice heard, schedule a call with me at www.ChatwithChristina.com and I’ll be happy to see what we can do to get you out to the world.
