Journalists are pitched…. a lot…. so it’s up to you to stand out. How do you make them want to use you? Do something outside of the ordinary. Don’t pitch what everyone else is pitching. Be unique. Be different.
You are an expert in your industry. Use that expertise, not to pitch a story around your expertise but pitch something going on in the world that you can then position yourself as the expert to talk about it. One of my favorite examples of this is a client who owns several homeless shelters. She wanted to just land publicity for her organization, but that is basically a one and done for the media. How many times will they cover one organization? Once, maybe twice in a year depending on if there a special event or something very newsworthy happens.
That being said, instead, we positioned her as the expert in homelessness. She did get her first story about her organization but then there was a study that was released about the homeless and cancer. One of her facilities is specifically for that population, so we were able to land her media on that topic. Our latest pitch is relating to coronavirus. How can you shelter at home if you don’t have a home?
She has been in the media repeatedly by taking studies or trends and pitching herself as the expert on that specific topic related to homelessness, because she owns many shelters. The best part of this is that they always say her name and her organization so she is able to get massive visibility over and over again.
Think outside of the box. Be the fish that jumps from the bowl full of fish to have its own bowl. Be extraordinary, stand-out, be unique, find a niche, and land in the media.

Hi everybody. It’s Christina Daves with this week’s Get Famous Friday PR Tip. This week I want to talk about not being ordinary. You want to be different. I’m always talking about thinking outside of the box, but you want to do things that are not the norm.
One of the best tips I ever got from a newspaper editor said, you know Christina, if you have a grand opening, let’s say of a Cupcakery, everybody’s going to do, you know, the big scissors and the ribbon and they’re going to have the mayor there. He goes, “I want to see the mayor taking a big bite out of the cupcake.” That’s the kind of stuff they want to put in the paper, not the pictures that everybody does.
So when you’re pitching your story, think of something outside of the ordinary that will make you stand out. So that is this week’s Get Famous Friday PR Tip. I hope you enjoyed that tip and all of the other tips we provide and please join our Challenge if you haven’t done so yet. It’s at YourPRChallenge.com. It’s a 10 day Challenge. It’s about 10 minutes a day. It will help you with branding, positioning yourself as an influencer, social media, and then actually how do you pitch the media? So I can’t wait to see you in the Challenge and I can’t wait to see you in the media.
